چکیده

The general employee scheduling problem extends the standard shift scheduling problem by discarding key limitations such as employee homogeneity and the absence of connections across time period blocks. The resulting increased generality yields a scheduling model that applies to real world problems confronted in a wide variety of areas. The price of the increased generality is a marked increase in size and complexity over related models reported in the literature. The integer programming formulation for the general employee scheduling problem, arising in typical real world settings, contains from one million to over four million zero~ne variables. By contrast, studies of special cases reported over the past decade have focused on problems involving between 100 and 500 variables. We characterize the relationship between the general employee scheduling problem and related problems, reporting computational results for a procedure that solves these more complex problems within 98-99 % optimality and runs on a microcomputer. We view our approach as an integration of management science and artificial intelligence techniques. The benefits of such an integration are suggested by the fact that other zero~ne scheduling implementations reported in the literature, including the one awarded the Lancaster Prize in 1984, have obtained comparable approximations of optimality only for problems from two to three orders of magnitude smaller, and then only by the use of large mainframe computers.

Multi-objective Solution Approaches for Employee Shift Scheduling Problems in Service Sectors (RESEARCH NOTE)

Today, workforce scheduling programs are being implemented in many production and service centers. These sectors can provide better quality products and/or services to their customers, taking into account employees’ desires and preferences in order to increase sector productivity. In this study, an employee shift scheduling problem in the service sector is discussed. In the problem, the aim is ...

An improved genetic algorithm for multidimensional optimization of precedence-constrained production planning and scheduling

Integration of production planning and scheduling is a class of problems commonly found in manufacturing industry. This class of problems associated with precedence constraint has been previously modeled and optimized by the authors, in which, it requires a multidimensional optimization at the same time: what to make, how many to make, where to make and the order to make. It is a combinatorial,...

A new approach in graph- based integrated production and distribution scheduling for perishable products

This study is concerned with how the quality of perishable products can be improved by shortening the time interval between production and distribution. As special types of food such as dairy products decay fast, the integration of production and distribution scheduling (IPDS) is investigated. An integrated scheduling of both processes improves the performance and costs because the separated sc...

Optimality of the flexible job shop scheduling system based on Gravitational Search Algorithm

The Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (FJSP) is one of the most general and difficult of all traditional scheduling problems. The Flexible Job Shop Problem (FJSP) is an extension of the classical job shop scheduling problem which allows an operation to be processed by any machine from a given set. The problem is to assign each operation to a machine and to order the operations on the machine...
